Lesson 4: The Process of Art Criticism using Tibetan Tangkas

 

In this lesson, students will spend some time reviewing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as related to 2-D works of Art. Students will also review Feldman's Aesthetic Criticism as applied to the study of art.

Using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, students will Study, Analyze, Interpret and Evaluate a Tibetan tangka in an individual and group format.

Lesson Objectives:

Knowledge students will gain:

  • Identify the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in a work of art.
  • Tenets of Buddhist philosophy.
  • Symbolism used in Buddhist art.
  • Purpose of Tankgas.
  • The unique art of the Himalayan cultures.
  • Art as visual teaching tool.
  • Art as communication.
  • Painting Techniques.
  • Understand the concept of Describe, Analyze, Interpret and Evaluate as it pertains to art.
