LESSON TWO- Reading and Writing About Art

OBJECTIVE: Students will learn to identify essential points in a news article about artwork and write summaries using those points.

Expect to spend at least three days on this lesson.
*Day one - Teacher explains and models lesson. Students research and find an article.
Students may use the Resources page to locate an article.
*Day two - Students read articles and complete the summarizing process.
*Day three - Students read summaries aloud.

TEN POINT METHOD OF SUMMARIZING NEWS ARTICLES
As students read an article, they will identify the following points:
       1. Title (put in quotation marks)
       2. Author
       3. Publication (underline)
       4. Date
       5. Main Idea
       6. Fact - Quote from the article.
       7. Opinion - Quote from the article.
       8. Comparison/Contrast - Quote from the article.
       9. Purpose (inform, persuade, entertain)
     10. New vocabulary (write down five and define with context clues)

Students will write a brief summary utilizing all of the above points. Points must be underlined and numbered to correspond with the numbered points. Circle the numbers. Use the new vocabulary to indicate understanding of the words rather than merely listing.

Students will read their summaries aloud to the class.
