Hinduism and Buddhism:
Lessons for World History
Lesson Two:
The Chandogya Upanishad
Objective:
Provide students with a metaphor and way of visualizing the abstract concepts of Brahman and Atman in Hinduism so they can answer the question "What is the Hindu concept of the Self?"
Procedure:
This lesson is intended as a continuation of lesson one, which introduces them to the basic concepts of Hinduism.
Have students read the selection from the Chandogya Upanishad and answer the reading questions about the text. You can have them do this for homework, or read the selection silently in class then answer the questions with a partner or in small groups before rejoining the class to discuss.
Assessment:
Ask students to choose two of the reading questions to answer more completely (in two or three paragraphs) now that they have been discussed in class.
