Implementation:

Students of our school live in the White Mountains of rural New Hampshire (our town is the closest town to Mt. Washington which is the highest mountain in the Northeastern United States) and are used to the idea of living, working, and hiking in the mountains. They know older students who have become “hutsmen/women” (maintaining the huts of the Appalachian Mountain Club in the summers). They also know of the dangers which the mountains pose as many of them know or have relatives who work on the “Search and Rescue Teams”.

I will ask the students to compare the Himalayas with the White Mountains. We will “brainstorm” about what aspects of mountains we should consider in our comparisons and then do research to find that information.

I have arranged with Chuck Theodore, a renowned White Mountain photographer, to use the photographs from his web page and those from the College of the Holy Cross websites for the NEH Institutes of "Cultures and Religions of the Himalayans" to visually compare the White Mountains and the Himalayas.l
