BECOMING A HERMIT

Bringing a character to life on stage is a fun but challenging adventure. You want your character to be as ALIVE and UNIQUE and CREATIVE as you are. In creating a character you embark on a parallel journey of discovery about your own life: who you were, who you are now, and who you are becoming; as well as about the life of your character: who she was, who she is now (in the play) and who she is becoming. This is called the arc of a character's life. The character has two main arcs, the one presented in the script, and the arc of her whole life, what her life has been like up to this point when we meet her in the play. You as the actor need to investigate this journey by gathering clues from the play: what does the text tell you about being a hermit?

Along with analyzing the script, you need to use your imagination to infuse the written text with your spirit, your heart, your mind and your body. YOU are the vehicle to bring this character to life. So, as you come to know the hermits, you will also come to know yourself.

Acts One through Four take place in Kanva's Forest hermitage. Hermits lived in harmony with nature, other hermits and the gods. They were interested in experiencing the unity of all living beings, and lived and worked in simple communities in order to pray and meditate to achieve this unity. We will balance a study of geography, nature, meditation and creative writing as we uncover the hermit within.
