Exercises

  1. Choose a hero to start the course.  Aeneas is an excellent choice.  Have the students initially create a list of ideal heroic traits.  Collect these lists and assign the Aeneid.  After you have covered the other heroes in the curriculum, reassign the Aeneid to them.  Now return their lists and have them reflect upon how their views have changed or were reinforced over the duration of the course.  How would they change the lists, if at all?

  2. Have each student choose a different hero.  Provide either summaries or complete texts of that hero’s tale.  Have them present to the class via Powerpoint, poster, or another creative method.

  3. Choose two heroes.  Compare and contrast.

  4. Create their own hero in the tradition of one of the heroes they have studied.

  5. Create small groups and have them act out tales of their choice.

  6. Be creative.
