Enduring Understanding
Reading expands our understanding of the world, its people, and ourselves.
Read-On STARTALK 2021 Goals
By the end of the Read-On STARTALK 2021 program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the components of Chinese literacy.
- Apply the major research findings on literacy acquisition in Chinese and other languages, to identify best practices in literacy instruction.
- Develop Standards-based, communication-focused thematic modules for students at various proficiency levels that integrate best practices in Chinese literacy instruction.
- Guide students to become effective readers and communicators in Chinese.
Read-On STARTALK 2021 Format
The 2021 Read-On Program was held entirely on-line during the summer of 2021. Participants included 8 high school and 8 college teachers from 9 different states, working with an 8 member leadership team of master teachers at the middle, high school, and college level, and supported by a web master.
The program was offered in two parts.
Part 1 took place over two weeks, in which participants worked through a self-paced online course on Chinese literacy development consisting of five modules, with assessment after each module, and attended real-time, virtual office hours and discussion sessions. The online course will be available to the public in the fall of 2023.
Part 2 took place over 5 days, in which participants worked in online, real-time, large- and small-group sessions to develop their final projects. An overview of the projects, as well as links to videos, lesson plans, and activities, are provided below.

College Group Final Project |
For the final project, the participants in the High School Group applied what they learned in the Read-On Program by incorporating more activities targeting literacy development to enhance the 2013好想谈恋爱 Looking for a Date unit. The 2021 unit plan is available for download from the High School Final Projects page. Daily plans are also accompanied by supporting materials developed by participants for classroom use. These materials are framed around one central theme, identified learning objectives, targeted literacy skills from lower- to higher-level, and annotations for teaching instruction.

For their final projects, the participants in the College Group applied what they learned in the Read-On Program to rework their approach to teaching a unit that they had used with their students during the prior academic years. The final projects are presented as "Think Aloud" videos. The instructions for preparing these videos are available here.
The videos, including new Standards-based, thematically-centered units are available for download from the College Group Final Projects page. Many are also accompanied by supporting material developed by participants for classroom use. They are framed around Essential Questions and incorporate course and unit ‘Can-Do’ statements, real-life Integrated Performance Assessment tasks, and participant reflections on their take-aways from the Read-On Program and their future plans for professional development. There are 8 projects in all. |
