Himalaya: Sanskrit: Abode of snow

As the dew is dried up by the morning sun, so are the sins of humankind by the sight of the Himalayas.
-Hindu proverb

Tiger's Nest Monastery, Bhutan

This thematic unit is designed for second-graders.  In our study of the continents and major landforms of the world, we will study the Himalaya, their people and culture. We will use Jataka tales to practice reading fluently, comprehending text, and speaking clearly to an audience.  Their emphasis on right conduct and speech are also perfect vehicles for character education.  This unit will also study mountains and the habitat they provide for the people, animals, and plants of that biome.  Students will also research the animals and write poems and stories about the Himalayas.  By using a multi-modal approach, second-graders will begin to understand this exciting area.

This site was created by Nancy Barboza at the NEH Summer Institute "Literatures, Religions, and Arts of the Himalayan Region," held at the College of the Holy Cross, Summer 2008.
