Poetry and other activities:

The Tibetan poet Gendun Chompel wrote an abcderian poem in Tibetan, “Acrostic Sent to Labrang.”   The students could try their hand at writing an abcderian poem, one which uses the successive letters of the alphabet to start each phrase.  This special type of acrostic poem presents a great differentiated learning activity because students can go as far as they can, beginning with the letter A. Some students might go from A to Z, while others might write a shorter poem about the Himalaya.

Other activities that might be adapted for an elementary classroom include:

*Cooking Tibetan, Indian, or Nepalese food
*A study of some of the ways people living in the Himalaya say hello. For example: Tashi dele (Tibet)
*For visual discrimination: children might complete a word search using some of the countries represented in the Himalaya
*Study some of the plants found in the Himalaya
*Read aloud fiction and non-fiction books for students to understand some of the people of this diverse region.
