General Info

Describing an Area Using
the Five Themes of Geography
The Himalayas

The Five Themes of Geography were developed by the National Geographic Society
in order to improve the teaching and learning of geography in the schools.

These five themes include: LOCATION, PLACE, REGION,
MOVEMENT, and HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

Lesson:

1. Hand out a sheet on the Five Themes of Geography and explain each theme in detail.

2. Have students bring in pictures that they believe represent the Himalayas through the 5 themes. If you feel more comfortable you may bring in your own pictures for the students ahead of time. Good resources for pictures are from National Geographic and this particular website that you can link to.

3. Gather all the pictures in the beginning of class and give a group (2 students) an envelope. Ask them to gather 2 pictures for each theme and put them into the envelope. Have each group identify and explain which theme each picture represents.
