Map of India-South AsiaModern Conflicts:

As global interdependence grows strong and our world community becomes increasingly more connected, conflicts have emerged all over the world over resources and land usage, sustainable development, human rights, claims of sovereignty, religious conflict and war, and internal reaction to oppression.  The Himalayan region is not exempt from these modern conflicts; rather it is home to many of them.

Kashmir and Tibet are two of the world’s hot spots.  These two areas are regularly in the news, discussed at political conventions all over the world, used as leverage for other nation’s gain, and generally riddled with strife.  Kashmir is currently battling India for independence and recognition of its own ethnic boundaries; while Tibet is the center of political contention surrounding human rights and independence.  Each conflict has a complex and long history.

Sign stating CONFLICTThe lessons included here are designed for modern world history curriculum at the high school level.  The lessons are designed to allow students to gather information and debate the national and international implications of these hot spots.  Extension ideas have been provided wherever possible.
