Young Buddhist Monks with candlesReligions of the Himalayas:

It is impossible to separate political and religious topics in the Himalayas.  The two are interwoven since ancient times.  Therefore, a study of the Himalayan region must include an in-depth discussion of the region’s religious traditions.  The two dominant religions in the Himalayas are Hinduism and Buddhism.  Each has its origins in the Indus River Valley and each has blended local animistic and tribal traditions into its theology.  Both religions are practiced today in many countries and regions of the world.

Om   Hinduism is the dominant religious tradition in India and is deeply ingrained in  the cultural and societal aspects of daily life.  Buddhism arose later in the history of this region.  Over time this religious practice spread into China, Korea, and Japan through contact with the Silk Road and marginalization by Hindu leaders in India and Nepal.

Included in this site is an overview of the religion, its specific origins, major deities, practices, and a glossary of terms.  Hopefully, the information included in this site will assist your classroom instruction and further the students’ knowledge.
