Student Activity One: A Pilgrim's Journal

You are a pilgrim who is visiting the four sites of the major events of the Buddha’s Life in Nepal and India: Lumbini, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, and Kusihagar.

.
You will keep a record of your pilgrimage by doing the following:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the history of Buddhist pilgrimage and the many different reasons behind these journeys.
  2. Analyze photos and writings of the four sacred sites as recorded by pilgrims and visitors over the centuries.
  3. Research the historical and religious significance of each of the sites and present significant features of each site, i.e. temples, monuments, physical features, etc.
  4. Create a journal and include the following;
    1. Cover
    2. Inside Cover page – name, destination, date
    3. Map showing route of pilgrimage
    4. Pictures of sites
    5. Your account should answers the following:events that you took part in -
      Journal the following:
                       a) What is the importance of each site as it relates to the life of the historical Buddha?
                       b) Physical geography of each site: identify mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and deserts found there.
                       c) What significant structures/ relics are found there?
                       d) What does the environment of the pilgrimage site look like?
                       e) How is the Buddha revered at each site?
                       f) What events did you participate in at each site? What encounters with other pilgrimsdid you have?
