Targeted Skills and Knowledge
Lower-level skills:
Character literacy: Identify character components, configurations; write characters regularly following proper stroke order.
Word literacy: Use lexical compounding strategies to form new words, infer the meaning of unknown compound words.
Syntactic awareness: Parse a sentence into meaningful chunks; build automaticity in sentence comprehension; use syntactic knowledge to infer unknown words; identify parts of speech based on lexical and syntactic use.
Higher-level skills:
Pre-reading: Use text title and illustrations to predict content, skim and scan the text for literal information, activate prior knowledge including knowledge about cultural background.
During-reading: Identify main ideas, classify supporting details, answer inferential questions as an active reader.
Post-reading: Summarize main viewpoints and make inferences about author’s point of view.
