Study Guide Questions for Week 10
Reading: Pascoe, "'Dude, You're a Fag': Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse" (Moodle article)
Pascoe, Dude, You're a Fag, pp. 175-193 (Moodle article)For each week's readings, you should complete the Ethnography Response Form and submit it along with a two-page excerpt from your fieldnotes for that week. While the form asks you general questions about an author's theoretical framework and methodology, these study guide questions are intended to help you focus your reading on the specific issues and methods used by the author and to consider both critically. These study guide questions will usually form the basis for our in-class discussions.
1. How is Pascoe's approach to masculinity and sexuality different from how masculinity is treated in other sociological studies? How does she use the concept of performativity?
2. What methods did Pascoe use? What role did her own subjectivity play in her project?
3. How is the discourse of "fag" used to discipline boys' gender? How is it connected to race?
4. Why, according to Pascoe, is homophobia insufficient as a characterization of boys' fag discourse?
