Lesson 1: Physiographic Map of the Himalayan Region (Big Map)

Objectives:
    Students will be able to
1. Locate and map key physiographic features of the Himalayan region
2. Generate and use a map key
3. Gain an understanding of the spread of religion in the Himalayan region along key physiographic features

  Materials:
1. Overhead projector(s)
2. Overhead transparencies of an outline map of Asia.  Provided are Map 1 (Landforms of Asia Map) or Map 2 (Southern Asia, no labels).  
3. Poster board/Butcher paper
4. Markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.
5. Tape
6. Atlas, textbooks, reference materials

Activity
1. Place students in-groups of 3-4.  Each group should be given an overhead projector, overhead transparency, and poster board/butcher paper
2. Project and image of the map onto the board/paper that has been taped to the wall. 
-Make sure the image is centered and fills as much of the poster as possible
3. Have each group trace the outline map.  If students are using Map 1, have them mark the physiographic features as well.
4.  When the outline is completed, remove the map from the wall.  Using the reference material have students label
- Key physiographic features (river, deserts, mountains, plateaus, bodies of water, etc)
- Key political features (cities, empires, countries, etc)
- A key for the mapped features 

Conclusion
1. Have each group share their map and point out key features
2. Introduce students to Hinduism and Buddhism and how the spread of these religions is related to the physiographic features that were mapped.
