Studying the Silk Road

In their Social Studies class, my fourth grade students study American History. Before we begin this unit, we will read and discuss European interest in the East. Our text introduces this era by relating stories of several early explorers, beginning with Marco Polo.
My goal is to give the students an understanding of the importance of the Silk Road; why Europeans sought to tap into this resource, and ultimately what the Silk Road specifically, and exploration generally had to do with American history.
