Targeted Skills and Knowledge

Lower-level reading skills:

Character literacy: identifying character components (radical knowledge)

Word literacy: Use lexical compounding strategy to form new words, infer the meaning of unknown compound word

Syntactic awareness: Use syntactic knowledge to infer unknown words, identify parts of speech based on lexical and syntactic use

Higher-level reading skills: pre-reading, during reading, post-reading

Pre-reading: Predicting, skimming, scanning, previewing with purpose, activating cultural background and prior linguistic knowledge.

During-reading: Identifying main ideas, classifying supporting details, categorizing contextual clues (sequence markers, transition markers, discourse markers, etc.); conjecturing word/phrase meaning from the context; making inferences with in-text cues and/or gap-filling strategies;

Post-reading: Summarizing main viewpoints and making inferences about attitudes; memorizing and/or retelling with the use of textual organizers and contextual markers.
