Workshop on Literacy Issues in CFL continued, Dr. Michael Everson
Afternoon
Small and whole-group discussions of sentence level reading skills: What skills do you need in order to “raud” at different levels?   How do you teach students to acquire these skills?  What type of readings can support this? 
Skills:

  • Character and word recognition
  • use of grammatical cues to identify phrases and sentence structure. 
  • vocabulary building: word families.
  • differences in English and Chinese preferred grammatical sequence (Subject + Adj. V).  
  • paragraph level parsing: topic comment, topic chain, anaphoric omission, discourse connectors

Grade-level and full-group discussions of grade-level literacy goals and associated reading skills for level I and level 2, and research applications (team leaders)

Skype discussion with guest expert Dr. Yongfang Zhang: “Develop Literacy through Task-based Reading and Writing Activities”
Grade-level group discussions on the use of writing in reading assessment; formative/summative assessment
