Himalayan Buddhism in Practice: An Introduction to Art

Monlam Thangka

In-Class Talking Points:

AM Session: Discussion will begin and center around two questions; What is art?, and What is Buddhist art? We will consider how the West thinks of and utilizes art, and the role of art in Himalayan Buddhism. The goal is to give students an understanding of imagery in Buddhist art, and a vocabulary for which to talk about art in general and Buddhist art specifically.

PM Session: View and discuss NOVA program "Lost Treasures of Tibet".

Journal Assignment: Imagine that you were hired to curate an exhibit of Nepalese and Tibetan thangka paintings for the Huntsville Museum of Art. What would you want your audience to know about the art as they viewed the show?
