On our final day, we will tackle two modern concerns; how Buddhism and the Himalayas are portrayed in the West, and the contributions being made by a new generation of Himalayans.

Film Talking Points:
How is Buddhism portrayed in Kundun? What Western stereotypes about the Himalayas and Buddhists did you notice?
How does the documentary portray Buddhism in present day Nepal? Discuss similarities and differences between the philosophy we studied and the way Buddhism is practiced in the film.

In Class Reading: "Waterfall of Youth" and "Journal of the Grassland" from Song of the Snow Lion

What circumstances is Gyal reacting to in "Waterfall..."? According to this poem, how should we feel about Tibet's future? What is the tone of "Journal..."? What traditions does the author put into question?

Essay Assignment:
