Unit Overview |
In this unit, the students will learn about what Chinese and American college students do during the summer break, and will discuss their own summer plans. They will practice various reading strategies such as scanning, skimming, rauding, summarizing and making inferences. In addition, the students will read several authentic blog posts about studying abroad and travel in China, then work in groups to prepare a travel plan. For their final project, students will share their group travel plans in oral and written presentations. |

Phase 1
Pre-reading activities to activate students’ background knowledge and lexical knowledge with the use of authentic materials and visual aids. First reading activities to grasp the basic information of the text through skimming and scanning. Develop automaticity and fluency using technology.
Phase 2
Use contextualized grammar knowledge to guide during-reading activities and enhance students’ rauding skills at the sentential level. Check students’ comprehension with a read-aloud task.
Phase 3
Transfer the acquired word knowledge and rauding skills to four extensive reading tasks. Help students interpret and infer from the text in a cultural context with higher-level questions.
Phase 4
Complete the final assessment: through group discussion and internet search, write a detailed travel plan.
