Small and whole-group discussions of sentence level reading skills: What skills do you need in order to “raud” at different levels? How do you teach students to acquire these skills? What type of readings can support this?
Skills:
- Character and word recognition
- use of grammatical cues to identify phrases and sentence structure.
- vocabulary building: word families.
- differences in English and Chinese preferred grammatical sequence (Subject + Adj. V).
- paragraph level parsing: topic comment, topic chain, anaphoric omission, discourse connectors
